6 Atoms

1) Matter Anything that has mass and takes up space.

2) Element

Compose of one type of an atom and cannot be broken down into a simpler substance.

3) Atom

The smallest particle into which an element can be divided and still have the properties of that element.

4)  Subatomic Particle

Particles smaller than an atom, that combine together to form an atom.  (Protons, Neutrons, Electrons)
5) Proton A positively charged subatomic particle that resides within the atomic nucleus.
6) Neutron A subatomic particle contained in the nucleus. It has NO net electric charge, unlike the proton’s positive electric charge.
7) Electron A subatomic particle that carries a negative electrical charge, and resides outside of the nucleus.
8) Valence Electron An electron in the outer most shell (energy level) of an atom, which can combine with other atoms to form molecules.
9) Nucleus The center of an atom where all of the mass of that atom is located.  It is made up of protons and neutrons.

10) Electron Cloud

The region around the nucleus of an atom, where electrons are found.
