Week 28 Vocabulary
1) Lunar Eclipse When the Earth gets between the Sun and the Moon casting a shadow over the whole moon, causing the moon to seem to disappear.
2) Solar Eclipse When the Moon gets between the Earth and Sun casting a shadow on part of the Earth. From this shadow on Earth, the Sun appears to “go out”.
3) Neap Tide Less Extreme tides which occur twice in a month and are caused by the Sun, Moon, and Earth forming right angles.
4) Spring Tide More Extreme tides which occur twice in a month and are caused by the Sun, Moon, and Earth forming a straight line.
5) Solar System A star, its planets and moons, and all other objects which orbit around that star.
6) Light Year The DISTANCE light travels in one year. During this one year of time the light is traveling at the speed of light.
7) Galaxy A large grouping of stars, solar systems, dust, and gas that are held together by gravity.
8) Constellation When looking up at the stars from Earth, it is a pattern formed by that stars reminding us of common objects, animals, or people.
9) Planet An object within a solar system which orbits a star, has enough mass to create a nearly round shape, and that has cleared all the debris from its orbit.
10) Star Objects in the Universe which are made of gas and give off light. The light comes from nuclear reactions occurring within the object itself.
