Week 27 Vocabulary
1) Satellite An object, like a machine or a moon, which revolves or orbits around another object.
2) Moon Phases The changing appearance of the moon, during its 27.3 day cycle, as seen from the Earth.
3) Waning When the visible light on the moon appears to be DECREASING, during the second half of the moon’s cycle.
4) Waxing When the visible light on the moon appears to be INCREASING, during the first half of the moon’s cycle.
5) Axis The imaginary line that passes through the center of any object and this is what the object rotates around.
6) Rotation When an objects spins around its own axis. For the Earth this takes 24 hours.
7) Revolution When one object travels in an ellipse around another object. For the Earth this takes 365 days.
8) Orbit The elliptical path any object follows as it revolves around another object.
9) Solstices The longest and shortest days of the year. Marked by the Sun being directly over the highest and lowest point above and below the equator.
10) Equinoxes The only two days of the year with equal amounts of daylight and darkness for the whole planet.
