Week 9 Vocabulary
1) Periodic Table A chart where all elements are organized in columns and rows according to their properties.
2) Atomic Number The number of protons in the nucleus of an atom
3) Atomic Mass The sum of the protons and neutrons in the nucleus of each atom. (similar to weight)
4) Electron Cloud Region around the nucleus of an atom, where electrons are found.
5) Chemical Symbol One or two letter code that stands for the name of an element. (might be an abbreviation)
6) Period A horizontal row of elements in the periodic table arranged by atomic number.
7) Group Vertical column of elements in the periodic table in which elements have certain properties in common. (also called family)
8) Metal Elements with a shiny surface that conduct heat and electricity very well.
9) Nonmetal Any element on the periodic table that does not have the characteristics of a metal.
10) Metalloid Elements on the periodic table which have some properties of being metal and some properties of being nonmetal.
