Week 24 – Air Masses

1) Atmosphere

1)               Layer of air surrounding the earth which is made up of thin layers of gases, solids, and liquids.

2) Jet Stream

1)               Narrow stream of high speed wind high in the atmosphere, generally moving west to east in the Northern Hemisphere.

3) Weather

Conditions in the atmosphere, including humidity, cloud cover, temperature, wind, and precipitation.  A short period of time. 

4) Climate

         The general pattern of weather in a particular part of the world over a long period of time.

5) Air Pressure A measure of the weight of the atmosphere per unit of area on Earth’s surface, also called barometric pressure
6) Air Mass

        A large body of air that has about the same temperature and humidity throughout it.

7) Continental Polar

1)                An Air Mass that has cold temperatures and very little moisture (dry)

8) Continental
    Tropical

1)          An air mass that has warm temperatures and very little moisture (dry)

9) Maritime Polar

1)              An air mass that has cold temperatures and lots of moisture

10) Maritime Tropical

        An air mass that has warm temperatures and lots of moisture.
