1) Matter | Anything that has mass and takes up space. |
2) Element |
Compose of one type of an atom and cannot be broken down into a simpler substance. |
3) Atom |
The smallest particle into which an element can be divided and still have the properties of that element. |
4) Subatomic Particle |
Particles smaller than an atom, that combine together to form an atom. (Protons, Neutrons, Electrons) |
5) Proton | A positively charged subatomic particle that resides within the atomic nucleus. |
6) Neutron | A subatomic particle contained in the nucleus. It has NO net electric charge, unlike the proton’s positive electric charge. |
7) Electron | A subatomic particle that carries a negative electrical charge, and resides outside of the nucleus. |
8) Valence Electron | An electron in the outer most shell (energy level) of an atom, which can combine with other atoms to form molecules. |
9) Nucleus | The center of an atom where all of the mass of that atom is located. It is made up of protons and neutrons. |
10) Electron Cloud |
The region around the nucleus of an atom, where electrons are found. |
